Tsunami catastrophe: UNSW team heads to Sri Lanka
A team from UNSW is helping the United Nations plan health and psychosocial programs for Sri Lanka, in the aftermath of the South Asia tsunamis.
The team is involved in the needs assessment currently being planned by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in relation to psychosocial health, reproductive health and the protection needs of women and children.
"The staff will also identify and advise on how best to respond to workers in the frontline in dealing with manifestations of psychosocial distress and vulnerability," said Deborah Raphael, the Co-ordinator of International Health Programs, in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine.
The five team members currently in Sri Lanka are: Professor Anthony Zwi, Dr Chinthaka Balasooriya and Natalie Grove, all from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine; Dr Eileen Pittaway from the Centre for Refugee Research and Ms Linda Bartolomei from the School of Social Work.
