  • Arsenic contaminated ground water and rainwater harvesting as an alternative water resources [sic] to take a safe drinking water in Nepal
Paper presented at the 2nd International RWHM Workshop, 11 September, 2006, Beijing. In Terai Nepal, arsenic contamination in tubewell water has been a public health problem. Almost half of Nepal’s total population is living in 20 Terai districts and 90% of them are relying on ground water as their major source of water for all domestic purposes including drinking. Tubewell water samples testing for arsenic in Terai Nepal has shown the area to be arsenic vulnerable, and surveys on arsenicosis cases in six arsenic contaminated Terai districts conducted in between 2001 to 2004 have identified many arsenicosis cases. In these districts, tubewells exceeding 0.05 mg/L of arsenic varied from 2.3% to 12.1%. The prevalence of arsenicosis was found on average 2.2%, which varied from 0.7% to 3.6%. Further, in community-based surveys, 100.0% and 98.6% tubewells (n = 140) had arsenic concentrations above WHO and Nepal Standard limits of 0.01 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, respectively. Examination of arsenic-induced skin manifestations for 1,016 villagers revealed 15.1% as arsenicosis prevalence, with higher level in males (20.8%) than in females (8.8%). Most of the patients were identified in the early stages of the disease. They are expected to recover, if further exposure to arsenic is avoided by providing arsenic-safe drinking water. For prevention and reducing health damages, Nepal needs more arsenic mitigation programs. [author abstract]
