UNSW Desktop - Standard Operating Environment (SOE)


The introduction of a Standard Operating Environment (SOE) for computer desktops and notebooks has been implemented across UNSW. A SOE is a collection of standards and components that make up the university computer environment. The purpose of adopting a SOE is to increase consistency of service across the university. The SPHCM SOE includes:
  • A Base Operating system (e.g. Windows XP)
  • Security software (e.g. Anti-virus)
  • Application sets (e.g. MS Office and Adobe Reader are part of a base set)
  • Desktop Customisation and configuration
What software comes on the SPHCM SOE?

Some of the products / components are:
  • MS Windows XP Professional
  • MS Media Player
  • Internet Explorer
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection (Anti-Virus and Firewall)
  • MS Office 2007
  • MS Outlook
  • Microsoft Visio Viewer 2007
  • Adobe Reader
  • Adobe Shockwave Player
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • Apple QuickTime
  • RealPlayer
  • Sun Java 6 Update 6
  • UNSW Screensaver
  • Fonts Optima/Blender
  • 7-Zip
