- Criteria for the systematic review of health promotion and public health interventions
Systematic reviews of public health interventions are fraught with challenges. Complexity is inherent; this may be due to multi-component interventions, diverse study populations, multiple outcomes measured, mixed study designs utilized and the effect of context on intervention design, implementation and effectiveness. For policy makers and practitioners to use systematic reviews to implement effective public health programmes, systematic reviews must include this information, which seeks to answer the questions posed by decision makers, including recipients of programmes. This necessitates expanding the traditional evaluation of evidence to incorporate the assessment of theory, integrity of interventions, context and sustainability of the interventions and outcomes. Unfortunately however, the critical information required for judging both the quality of a public health intervention and whether or not an intervention is worthwhile or replicable is missing from most public health intervention studies. When the raw material is not available in primary studies the systematic review process becomes even more challenging. Systematic reviews, which highlight these critical gaps, may act to encourage better reporting in primary studies. This paper provides recommendations to reviewers on the issues to address within a public health systematic review and, indirectly, provides advice to researchers on the reporting requirements of primary studies for the production of high quality systematic reviews. - Financing health promotion
"Health promotion is a complex, multi-sector activity. Within the health system, it is organized vertically in the form of public health campaigns or integrated in other health care interactions. Furthermore, health promotion can be encouraged on the health care market, for example through the introduction of financial incentives. This paper advocates for health promotion in any form as a necessary intervention for improving and maintaining population health. It is considered equally relevant for developed and developing countries, although different countries may want to employ different strategies. While still under-funded in many high-income countries the lack of funding for health promotion is generally most notorious in middle and low-income countries. In many of the latter groups, health promotion is also not included in health system financing arrangements. This [2007] paper explores how health promotion can be integrated in health system financing schemes. The analysis departs from the health systems financing framework and is based on the health financing functions: revenue collection, pooling and purchasing. Examples from different countries are presented to illustrate a number of innovative financing options for health promotion."

- Health promotion for older people in the Czech Republic in a European perspective
This article describes health promotion for older people in the Czech Republic from the European perspective1. It is based on findings from the European project healthPROelderly. Implementation of health promotion in the Czech republic [sic] as a new public health concept is outlined from the historical point of view. Structures and processes of health promotion in the Czech Republic are described in the context of social policy, demography and health. The European project healthPROelderly is presented and the outcomes of an international literature search statistically analysed. Participating countries were divided into three macro-regions according to their geographical location and political and historical tradition – Mediterranean, West-European and formerly East-European macro-regions. The outcome of correspondence analysis partially confirms the hypothesis on the cultural background of the health promotion activities and strategies. Concerning themes addressed by health promotion projects most countries belonging to the Mediterranean or “Western European” macro-regions have concentrated on similar themes whereas this is not valid for the countries of the “Former Eastern European” macro-region. The hypothesis on macro-regional similarities in relation to settings of health promotion projects was not confirmed. In the conclusions the location of the Czech Republic in an international perspective is discussed and three Czech selected best practice projects are evaluated in relation to the statistical findings. - Polio Vaccines difficult to swallow: The story of a controversy in Northern Nigeria
This paper by Maryam Yahya of the Institute of Development Studies examines the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) controversy in Nigeria, where rumours that the vaccine was part of a Western tool to sterilise Muslims prompted a boycott of the vaccine by Muslim leaders. The author identifies sustained communication as the centrepiece of a successful immunisation campaign, something which is often neglected in immunisation budgets.

- Systematic Reviews of Health Promotion and Public Health interventions
"These guidelines complement Sections 3 to 11 of the Cochrane Reviewers’ Handbook. The content has been prepared by health promotion and public health researchers, decision-makers and practitioners experienced with both the use and conduct of systematic reviews. While these guidelines were originally developed to support the conduct of systematic reviews, they are also important for the conduct of primary research and for more informal reviews of research evidence. Many of the topics may not be unique to health promotion and public health reviews, but they are issues that are important in enabling research to be used in public health policy and practice decision making."
- What is the evidence on school health promotion in improving or preventing disease and, specifically what is the effectiveness of the health promoting schools approach?
"This is a Health Evidence Network (HEN) synthesis report by Stewart-Brown seeking to determine the effectiveness of health promotion in schools and, more specifically, the effectiveness of the 'health promoting schools' approach...
