Skills of an Exercise Physiologist

  • Perform health-risk appraisal for apparently-healthy and chronically-ill people.
  • Assess lifestyle behaviours, including physical activity patterns, eating habits, stress levels and readiness to exercise.
  • Perform comprehensive functional capacity evaluations, including physical fitness, posture and muscle balance, task-specific biomechanical analysis and motor control assessments.
  • Perform exercise tests, in particular assessment of cardiorespiratory and metabolic function.
  • Prescribe physical activity and exercise programs to maintain and promote good health.
  • Implement proven motivational and exercise-counselling strategies to facilitate behaviour change and enhance self-management.
  • Educate clients on the benefits of physical activity for prevention and management of disease, injury and disability.
  • Liaise with medical and other allied-health professionals for a multi-disciplinary approach to health care.
  • Access and evaluate the scientific and clinical evidence base for continued improvement of professional practice.
