Safe Work Procedures (SWP)
The objective is to ensure that written instructions have been developed for all activities that pose a risk to the health and safety of people. SWPs should be written by a staff member(s) and/or student(s) with sound, hands on experience and knowledge of the tasks.

Risk assessments
The objective is to ensure that all potential hazards associated with a task/equipment are identified and controlled so far as is reasonably practicable.

Sharing risk assessments and SWPs

It is good practice to share your risk assessments and SWPs (other than those that contain sensitive or confidential information) because many research groups have similar equipment and techniques. Follow this procedure for uploading your risk assessments/SWP on the shared Medicine site:
  1. Log-in to the Medicine H&S website with your zpass
  2. Click on the green button “Create a new page”
  3. In the “Type” drop-down list choose “RA and SWP”
  4. Complete the blank boxes. (The keywords used should be those that would be useful in a search for this document).
It is not sufficient to simply download a risk assessment/SWP; it must be adopted and changed to reflect what exactly happens in your area.
