The following research opportunities are available with the School of Medical Sciences:
Higher Degree Research Opportunities
The School offers the following research degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters by Research. Students who are interested in pursuing research opportunities should investigate the
Research Groups within the School initially. Alternatively, students could check the
Research Interests of SoMS Staff to locate the sections and supervisors that best align with their area of research. Information on the application process and entry requirements is available on the

Future Students section.
The School also offers
Academic Excellence (Top-Up) Scholarships and
Travel Grants to eligible students. Further information on other research scholarships and travel scholarships are available on the

Science Honours Opportunities
Students who are interested in pursuing the honours program should investigate the

Medicine Honours and ILP Opportunities
The Faculty of Medicine also offers a one-year supervised research program leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Medicine) Honours. Students who are interested in pursuing the honours program should investigate the
Research Groups within the School initially. Alternatively, students could check the
Research Interests of SoMS Staff to locate the sections and supervisors that best align with their area of research.
The Independent Learning Project (ILP) is intended to provide UNSW medical students with a period of in-depth study that engenders an approach to medicine that is constantly questioning and self-critical. The Faculty of Medicine website offers further information on the
Medicine Honours program and the
ILP program. Students can also contact the Honours/ILP Coordinator,
Dr John Hunt.
Undergraduate Opportunities
Undergraduate students at the School can apply for
Summer Research Awards to the value of $1,500 (at $250/wk) at the School. Students are expected to undertake 6 weeks of research in their chosen area during the November 2011 - February 2012 period. Further information is available on the

In addition, the Faculty of Medicine also offers the
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). UROP provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to experience real life in a research laboratory and gain insight into biomedical research and career opportunities. Further information on UROP is available on the
