Disease Discovery Evenings
Would you like to further your knowledge and understanding of disease processes and treatments?
Are you interested in medicine and disease?
Are you considering a career as a doctor or medical scientist?
The Museum of Human Disease is proud to present Disease Discovery Evenings, a series of fascinating public lectures and workshops. Each session offers interested secondary students and the general public an opportunity to learn more about a specific health or disease issue. Academic experts will lead the discussion and draw upon clinical examples and real pathology specimens to explain the science and treatments. Presentations will incorporate a variety of basic medical sciences, such as biochemistry, immunology, anatomy, and pathology to provide a holistic understanding of the condition. At the conclusion of the session, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Museum collection, with academics and volunteers at hand to explain relevant specimens.
The structure of each session is loosely modelled on teaching practises in the UNSW Medicine course and offers high school students a great insight into medical study. Medicine course and application information will be available for prospective students.
Monday 21st May - Understanding Cystic Fibrosis
Professor Adam Jaffe
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children . The genetic defect results in thick mucous across a number of body organs. In the lungs this mucous ultimately causes lung destruction and death. Current research is looking at various new medications which may help improve the removal of sputum from the airway. This includes the early treatment of cystic fibrosis related diabetes with insulin.
Professor Adam Jaffe is John Beveridge Professor of Paediatrics and Head of Discipline of Paediatrics at School of Women's and Children's Health. He is also a Consultant in respiratory medicine and Head of Respiratory Department at Sydney Children's Hospital. His research interests are in the use of gene therapies for the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis.
Professor Jaffe's other research interests can be found here.
