Honours Projects For 2011/12

The School of Medical Sciences Student Research Prospectus can be downloaded here:

The links below provide information about honours projects being offered within each department of the School of Medical Sciences, and in other departments and institutes affiliated with the School.

Guidelines for Supervision:

Supervisors of Honours students within the School of Medical Sciences must be a member of staff of the school or hold a conjoint appointment with the school. If the supervisor does not meet either of these requirements an additional supervisor who is a member of staff within the school must be appointed. Associate Supervisors may be appointed to play a role in the training and supervision of the student in the laboratory. This role can be undertaken by postdoctoral staff; however postgraduate students cannot take on the role of the associate supervisor.

A maximum of two honours students is allowed per supervisor and supervisors are required to confirm prior to the commencement of the project that they are financially able to support the project for the duration of the honours year and that all ethics and other approvals required for the project have been obtained.

Supervisors should bear in mind three important points when proposing an honours project: firstly, honours is only an introduction to research so expectations should be realistic; secondly, the proposed project needs to yield results within the period of the honours “year”; and finally, the honours year is, in fact, not a full year but only 6 to 7 months of research activity plus approximately 2 months to produce and submit a Project Manuscript.

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that their student(s) meet the deadlines of the honours program. If the Literature Review and/or the Project Manuscript are not delivered to the course coordinator by the deadline, a penalty of 1% of the total honours grade per day will be imposed in each case, unless an extension has been granted.

Supervisors are required to attend the two presentations of their honours student(s) in early June (Introductory Seminar) and late October (Final Seminar) in order to be aware of their students' performance. All supervisors are also required to attend the Student Interview of their student in early November. Please see the Honours Timetable for the precise dates and times of the above assessments. Detailed information regarding the requirements, structure and format of the Literature Review, Introductory and Final Seminars, Project Manuscript and Student Interviews are listed

Supervisors are also responsible for ensuring that their student(s) attend the Research Techniques Seminars (during session 1) and the School/Department/Institute research seminars (throughout the year). Please visit the School's website for the Research Techniques and School/Department Research seminar timetables.

Supervisors are required to grade their student(s) performance using the Supervisor's Assessment Form. This form outlines the criteria for assessing the student's performance and must be completed and given to the honours course coordinator at the Student Interview (see the "Honours assessment" for more information about the Student Interview). The Supervisors' assessment of the student accounts for 10% of the final honours grade.
