Therapeutic and Vaccine Research Program

The Therapeutic and Vaccine Research Program (TVRP) conducts a range of clinical trials designed to assess the effectiveness of new HIV therapies or candidate vaccines. These studies often provide not just biomedical data, but also evidence of the impact of policy practice and therapeutic guidelines in both resource-rich and resource-limited settings. TVRP staff provide leadership through the program’s role as an International Co-ordinating Centre for the INSIGHT network, a major international collaboration for the conduct of large clinical endpoint strategic trials in HIV disease which has more than 300 sites in 30 countries.

Sean Emery

BSc(Hons), PhD

Head and Professor

Professor Sean Emery is Head of the Therapeutic Vaccine Research Program. Sean Emery joined the NCHECR in 1993, becoming the Head of the TVRP in 1998. He is a founding member of the INSIGHT Executive and is co-chair of the NIH-funded START trial (Strategic Timing of Antiretroviral Therapy). He has been closely involved in the elaboration of some of the most influential pieces of HIV clinical research of the last decade, most notably the SMART study. He has had prime responsibility for the growth of the NCHECR international research network to its current coverage in countries of Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and Latin America. This network is active in the conduct of a series of large randomised interventional studies examining critical issues in the contemporary management of HIV infection.
