Schools and Affiliates


UNSW Medicine has nine schools, a cross-faculty collaboration, a number of centres - including four national research centres, two institutes and numerous affiliated research institutes, facilities and units that are located either on the university's city campuses in Randwick and Coogee or at various hospitals in metropolitan Sydney and rural New South Wales.

The University of New South Wales’ Initiative for Health and Human Rights (IHHR) is a multidisciplinary research, teaching, service and advocacy initiative founded collectively by the Faculties of Medicine, Arts and Social Science and Law. Established in July 2005 by NewSouth Global, the IHHR aims to develop integrated strategies to examine the intersection between health and human rights from new viewpoints. The IHHR advances health and human rights as both an area of study and a new, composite method of research. This work serves as the foundation for an interdisciplinary and international research network.

The School of Medical Sciences (SOMS) came out of the merger in 2002 of three schools: Anatomy, Pathology and Physiology and Pharmacology. Based at the Randwick end of the Kensington campus, SOMS has the greatest number of full-time academic staff of all the UNSW Medicine schools and a sizeable number of conjoint academic staff actively involved in the school's many teaching and research programs. In addition to its close involvement with the undergraduate Medicine curriculum and the Medical Sciences program, SOMS offers many opportunities for postgraduate research in its aforementioned disciplines in addition to its postgraduate coursework programs in Pharmaceutical Medicine and Drug Development and Sports Medicine.

Located on the Prince of Wales Hospital campus in the Black Dog Institute building, the School of Psychiatry shares numerous affiliations with other hospitals, including St George Hospital and Liverpool Hospital and further afield. The School of Psychiatry plays an active role in the undergraduate Medicine curriculum, particularly in its latter phases. Additionally, the school is involved in a number of leading research initiatives that offer the prospective research student unique study opportunities.

The School of Public Health and Community Medicine (SPHCM) came out of the merger in 2002 of three schools: Medical Education, Community Medicine and Health Services Management. It is one of the two big "on-campus" schools, SPHCM has a large number of full-time academic and research staff and an even larger number of conjoint academic staff participating in the school's full range of teaching and research programs. The school's teaching activities focus on the undergraduate Medicine curriculum and a range of innovative, flexibly delivered postgraduate programs, by coursework and research.


School of Women's and Children's Health

The School of Women's & Children's Health (SWCH) came out of the merger in 2003 of two schools: Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The Randwick Hospital campus, where the Royal Hospital for Women and the Sydney Children’s Hospital are located, is the administrative centre for the school as well as providing teaching and research facilities for students. Teaching and research, however, are not restricted to this campus, with St George, Liverpool and Bankstown hospitals also providing teaching and research opportunities. In the postgraduate coursework area, the School offers a diploma in Paediatrics and programs in Reproductive Medicine.


Prince of Wales Clinical School

Based in the historic Edmund Blacket building of the Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick, the Prince of Wales Clinical School (POWCS) is one of the oldest established Clinical Schools of UNSW Medicine. Owing in part to its proximity to a number of large public and private hospitals and research facilities, the school is well placed to play its part in contributing to the undergraduate Medicine curriculum. The school also offers postgraduate research programs that offer a wide array of specialisation.

Rural Clinical School

The Rural Clinical School was established in 2001 as part of a nation-wide initiative to address the doctor shortage in rural areas. The school has major campuses located in Albury Wodonga, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga which enables it to deliver the undergraduate Medicine curriculum in a range of unique rural settings. Students have the opportunity to study at the various campuses of this school for long and short term placements.


St George Clinical School

Based in the southern Sydney suburb of Kogarah, the St George Clinical School (STGCS) is located in the St George Hospital campus and enjoys close affiliations with Sutherland Hospital and other primary care services in the southern Sydney region. One of the largest Clinical Schools in terms of student numbers, St George has a sizeable academic and research community who are actively involved in the undergraduate Medicine curriculum. Additionally, the School offers numerous postgraduate research programs in new and innovative research areas.

Located in the inner Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst, the St Vincent's Clinical School (STVCS) on the St Vincent's Hospital campus, is a core component of the South Eastern Sydney & Illawarra Area Health Service. Owing to its central position and its local affiliations with primary care services and research facilities, the School is able to make a to the undergraduate Medicine curriculum. In close proximity to the School are two large research institutes and other facilities that offer the prospective postgraduate research student a wide range of study opportunities.


South Western Sydney Clinical School

With a campus that takes in Liverpool, Fairfield, Bankstown-Lidcombe and Campbelltown hospitals, the South Western Sydney Clinical School (SWSCS) is at the centre of a socially and ethinically diverse region of the Sydney metropolitan area. As a result of this students enrolled in the undergraduate Medicine program has a unique opportunity to learn in a diverse and exciting community. Spread across its many campuses are postgraduate research opportunities that are second to none.
