AMSA is the peak representative body for 13,000 medical students around Australia. It aims to ensure stakeholders in medical education, including government, universities and hospitals, work towards a well trained and sustainable medical workforce for the future of Australia’s health care system.

The NSW–based team underwent a rigorous selection process before being elected to the 2009 National Executive by representatives from each of the 19 medical schools across the country.

Incoming President, UNSW student Tiffany Fulde said that this was the first time in eight years that NSW had held the role. “It’s just fantastic timing. New South Wales has never been better placed to make a difference,” Ms Fulde said.

The team is comprised of 14 medical students, including 8 from UNSW, and represents the spectrum of a diverse medical student body– including undergraduate, graduate, metropolitan and regional background students. Other students on the team include 5 students from The University of Sydney and one student from the University of Wollongong.

“Our team shares a wealth of first hand experience in medical issues and representation as well as practical skills relating to our portfolios,” Ms Fulde said.

“We are at a vital time in AMSA’s history; medical student numbers are increasing exponentially and there are a host of issues challenging medical education and the health workforce,” she said.
