They were narrowly beaten by the host team from the University of Malaya. Jenny Liu, Tao Shen, Joshua Goldstein and Scott Jones performed exceptionally well to progress through a knock-out competition to the finals.

The quiz has been held annually since 2003 and the competition has grown larger each year, with teams from the Czech Republic, Russia and UNSW competing for the first time in 2008. This quiz has provided a vehicle for bringing together staff and students from medical schools around the globe.

With 38 teams competing, an elimination round consisting of an 80 minute written examination was held on day 1 (22 August) to select the 16 teams that would go on to compete in the knock-out oral competition the following day. In each round of the knock-out competition, questions were directed at individual team members with an opportunity to consult with the rest of the team (for a reduced score) if required. In the event of an incorrect answer, the opposing team was given the opportunity to answer the question.

The UNSW team was accompanied to Kuala Lumpur by Dr Lesley Ulman and Dr Nicole Marden (Department of Physiology, School of Medical Sciences UNSW). Dr Ulman participated on the panel of judges at the physiology quiz. Fiona Wilson, a current honours student in physiology, accompanied the team to film the event.

An in-house physiology quiz was held in the School of Medical Sciences back in June, with 13 of the top physiology students from the medical and sciences program invited to participate. Jenny Liu (Medicine), Tao Shen (Medicine), Joshua Goldstein (Medical Sciences) and Scott Jones (Medical Sciences) were selected to represent UNSW as a result of their performance in this quiz.
