Starting Essentials
Faculty Induction
The Faculty's HR Consultant will arrange a time to meet with each new staff member (salaried staff) to provide information on a number of issues related to employment at UNSW. You will be provided with a staff kit, which will help you to begin to access staff services.
Information for
non-salaried staff (Conjoints, Visiting, etc.) is provided in their letter of offer. If further assistance is required please contact the Faculty's HR consultant on 9385 3859.
Staff ID Number
All staff are assigned a staff ID number when employment commences. The Faculty's HR Consultant will provide you with this number, as part of your initial induction (for non-salaried staff this will be provided in your letter of offer). All staff ID numbers start with an "S" and seven digits, e.g. S1234567. You will need this number in order to undertake many administrative processes. If you forget or lose your staff ID number, you should contact the Faculty's HR consultant on 9385 3859.
ID Card (Library and Room/Building Access)
Your staff ID Card is also a swipe access card (coded for
access to secure rooms/buildings if required) and a library card. Borrowing details can be found at
Library website.
- Salaried Staff
All salaried staff are required to have a ID Card. An ID Card is obtained by completing a Staff ID Application Form located on the
FM Assist website. You will need to speak with your unit’s Manager or your supervisor for account details and approval. Once completed, you will need to take this form to e-spot Security on the ground floor of The Red Centre to have your photo taken and card issued.
- Non-Salaried Staff
Non-salaried staff may be required by their work area to have a UNSW ID card. You will need an ID card if you intend to borrow from the UNSW Library.

Parking on Campus
Staff may apply for a parking permit or use the metered parking around campus. Any staff member parking on campus must do so in a recognised parking space. Parking in a non-parking area or remaining in a metered parking space after the meter has expired, will incur a NSW Government parking infringement notice. The Faculty
will not support payment of any parking infringements from University funds under any circumstances. This applies to infringements that may be incurred by staff, students and any visitors to the campus.

non-salaried staff - Select "Permit Application - Upfront Payment" form (tick "Other" option)

Occupational Health and Safety
All staff and students of the Faculty are represented through a 3-tiered committee structure. As a staff member your OHS issues will be represented on a level 3 Committee. To find out who is your OHS representative, please contact your unit’s Manager (information is also provided on School websites). Should you have any OHS concerns, you should raise this in the first instance with your supervisor or OHS representative.
All staff at UNSW are responsible for following OHS policies and procedures and ensuring that their conduct does not endanger others. To access these policies and procedures please go to
Policies. As a part of this responsibility, all staff are required to undertake the OHS Awareness Training run by the UNSW OHS & Workers Compensation Unit or the Faculty OHS Coordinator. For more information on what this training involves and how to book it, go to the
OHS & Workers Compensation Unit website or speak to your OHS representative. Once you have undertaken the course, you should advise your supervisor and OHS representative.
Within your work unit, there will be a nominated and trained Fire Warden and First Aid Officer. For information on who these staff are, contact your unit’s Manager. Should you wish to become a fire Warden, First Aid officer or OHS employee representative, you should discuss this with your OHS representative. Please note that specific training must be undertaken for all these positions.
