Research at UNSW Medicine
As a member of the Group of 8 research-intensive universities and the Universitas 21 grouping, UNSW is rightly proud of its national and international research profile which, in recent years, has seen a spectacular rise in competitive funding to support world class research. In keeping with this enviable reputation, the Faculty of Medicine is at the forefront of UNSW's research profile.
- In 2006, the Faculty of Medicine contributed $70 million in research income out of a total $139 million for UNSW as a whole. For several years the Faculty of Medicine has accounted for approximately 40-50% of all research income at UNSW. This includes approx. 38% of the most prestigious component of this, represented by the highly competitive “Category 1” peer-reviewed research awards from bodies such as the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
- Researchers within our Faculty currently hold or share 7 NHMRC Program Grants with other groups within UNSW or at other institutions which are administered through UNSW.
- Compared to other Australian Universities, UNSW has the highest citation impact in Clinical Medicine (at 6.33).
Programs of Study, Interests and Strengths
The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of excellence in biomedical as well as public health research. The diverse range of both stimulating and novel research programs available in this Faculty provides many opportunities for postgraduate study. Such programs are currently being conducted at the UNSW campus in Kensington as well as its Clinical Schools, Centres and Research Institutes.
Research Integrity
A Research Integrity Subcommittee was commissioned by the Faculty Standing Committee to develop a series of recommendations that would establish ways of dealing with grievances and research misconduct as well as more preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of such events.
