Tobacco smoking is the major preventable cause of cancer. Programs designed to reduce smoking prevalence and in the community. These include projects that have been/are conducted in general practice, hospitals, medical schools and in the workplace, such as the NSW Police Service and Australia Post. Current research in School of Public Health and Community Medicine is focussed on evaluating pharmacotherapies for smoking cessation (nicotine gum, patch and bupropion). Other research is focused on educating medical students about tobacco

Cancer may be prevented by evaluating evidence that particular environmental exposures to recognised carcinogens is contributing to the burden of disease. Environmental carcinogens may affect those in particular occupations or members of the wider community who are live in relevant locations or are implicated by other variables. Occurrence of potentially carcinogenic exposures, ranging from environmental tobacco smoke to the impact of contaminated industrials sites is investigated by staff of the South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit.
