O-S HELP Loan
OS-HELP is a new financial assistance initiative introduced by the Commonwealth to assist eligible students with a range of expenses for the purposes of overseas study. Students may receive loans for amounts starting at $1000 to a limit of $5000 for a study period of up to six months. This amount may be used to help with a range of expenses such as airfares and accommodation.
The scheme is targeted at students undertaking an entire semester exchange, though the staff inform us that medical electives are an equally valid use of the scheme.
The borrowed amount is added to your accumulated HECS debt, and paid off at the same rate while you work. While, like HECS, there is no interest on the loan (just adjusted for inflation), it's important to note that a significant loan fee of 20% is attached, such that if you borrow $5,000 an amount of $6,000 is debited to your HECS account.

South Africa medical elective project
MozVolunteers is a growing organisation that was founded in 2007. The first project was based in Xisondwe, Mozambique and has now grown to support many families, provide education, health information and primary healthcare for a whole village. The Xisondwe community have further been instructed to develop various business initiatives with the help of micro loans, which enable the project to remain sustainable. We will soon be opening a second Mozambique project in the Ponta D’Oura area.
We have since expanded our horizons and have started working with various NGOs, community organisations and clinics in the KwaLesha and Khula regions of South Africa. This new collaboration project consists of elements such as community assistance and support, micro-loans, support for crèches and the provision of skilled medical personnel at understaffed rural clinics.
A major element of our South African initiative is the provision of a medical elective program, open only to medical students. Students are invited to submit applications to participate in this program. Places are limited and extremely popular, so we suggest that any interested students submit their applications early to avoid disappointment.
Students are given the opportunity to participate in an organised program of community participation where they provide assistance whilst furthering their medical knowledge and training, particularly regarding prevalent diseases, such as TB and HIV/AIDS. The majority of the students’ time will be spent at their allocated clinic. All the clinics we work with are rural, understaffed and over-subscribed. They are all in receipt of some form of government funding and aim to provide diverse services, ranging from cancer diagnosis, to mental health, ante-natal care and infectious disease care and treatment. Students are allocated a supervisor and work alongside them, providing health care assistance and learning from observation and participation in the workplace. In addition, Wednesdays are set aside to provide an opportunity for participation in local culture: activities are provided such as craft making, dancing, cultural tours and isiZulu ritual. Wednesday afternoon is a tutorial session, which is an opportunity for reflection on the preceding week and the generation of goals and aims for the proceeding week.
All students are given an isiZulu lesson daily, and at weekends they are free to experience the many tourist amenities in the local area. Monzi is a ten minute drive from the stunning Isimangaliso Wetland Park and buzzing coastal village of St Lucia. Other nearby attractions are the Hluhluwe Imfolozi park (Big 5 safaris); Swaziland, Durban, Jozini, Sodwana and Kosi Bays.
Students are provided with airport transfer on arrival (Richard’s Bay), accommodation, three meals a day, 24 hour support, academic assistance (where necessary) and various opportunities to experience isiZulu culture and entertainment in the picturesque Monzi village.
All medical elective students in 2011 and 2012 are invited to participate in a complementary full day safari.
