Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE) Survey
Have you put in your return? Our Faculty completion rate is still low!
(Note: You should have previously been notified about this survey if you were required to complete it)
The link to complete the survey is https://iaro.online.unsw.edu.au/survey/sre_tc_survey.show_login
To receive the faculty incentive bonus the requirements were as follows:
UNSW staff have been asked to complete the SRE survey for the period 18th – 31st July 2011. Staff have until this FRIDAY 5th August to ensure they finalise their returns. A large proportion of our block grant funding depends on this survey so it is important that we meet the minimum return rate set by DIISR.
If you are having trouble in completing the survey please contact Grahame Pearson (ext 59376) or email sre@unsw.edu.au. As at Monday evening (1st August) approximately 50% of staff required to complete the survey had started so please get on and complete the task.
Participate in UNSW “Facebook for Health” research – Enter draw for $500!
All UNSW staff and students are invited to take part in the "Facebook for Health" research study, which is being conducted online by the UNSW Centre for Health Informatics (HREC no. 10109):
Use a new website called ‘Healthy.me’ (developed at UNSW) to manage your health and answer a few short questionnaires. All eligible participants will enter into a draw to win $500 as an incentive for participation!

Web Update
The faculty web project finally has something clickable to show. Yesterday (4 August) we were down at NDARC (National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre) and we released their website for internal use before we go live at the end of the month.
UAT Version of NDARC website: http://ndarc.cmsuat.med.unsw.edu.au
You can also find a copy of the slides I used on the blog site we have been using to describe the project
Blog site: http://blogs.unsw.edu.au/mcsu
PDF version of Web Update Aug 2011: http://blogs.unsw.edu.au/mcsu/files/2011/08/Web-Update-Aug-2011.pdf
As I have previously stated, this is the pilot project for the rest of the Faculty to test our new server systems and linkages with other UNSW websites. It will also help us (and NDARC) test the types of content that we/they want to release.
For those of you keeping score: the new platform runs on Drupal 7 and runs on a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). We have a shared set of database tables to enable all the websites on our platform to share details on people/projects and news/events. We also have worked hard on a way to import data from the Research Gateway (http://research.unsw.edu.au/).
We are working on getting the site to go live at the end of the month.
Research File Storage
The Faculties now have a central spot to put some of our larger amounts of research data. The new cross-Faculty Research File Storage system is now up and running. We have been testing it for a week now and just about to start adding some real data. It links to our existing UNSW systems (groups) so managing it should be relatively simple.
We now need to work out who might need this type of storage system in Medicine.
So if you think this might be useful to you or your group then send Sami Korrell an email and let him know how much storage you might need and for what it will be used. We need to do this for capacity planning and to work out how to build a service around this.
IT Manager Secondment
Luc Betbeder is being seconded into the role of Director of Faculty IT Services for six months while Jim Leeper takes up a secondment in the IT Infrastructure group. During this period of time, Sami Korell will take over as Faculty IT Manager.
As most of you will know, Sami has extensive experience in the Faculty and in providing excellent customer service. However, you might not know that Sami started in IT at UNSW in 1990 (anyone remember the Finance Mainframe?) and with the Faculty of Medicine in 1996. I actually remember Sami coming to my office in Community Medicine (on the sneaky top level of Wallace Wurth with no lift access) in 1993, when I started, and he connected me to the Internet. In those days getting connected to the internet involved configuring a BNC Ethernet Card and sacrificing a goat.
Anyway, I am very confident that Sami and the team will continue to deliver on the projects and services that we are involved in. Please provide him with the same support that I have enjoyed over the last 5 years.
Cheers
Luc
