NSW students win AMSA National Executive 2009

UNSW medical students combined with other NSW medical students were announced at the 2009 National Executive of the Australian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) in Brisbane on October 19. AMSA is the peak representative body for Australia's 13,000 medical students and aims to ensure that all levels of government, as well as other stakeholders in the medical education arena, are aware of student perspectives and continually work towards ensuring a well trained and effective medical workforce for the betterment of Australia's health care system.

The NSW-based team underwent a rigorous selection process before being elected by representatives from each of the 19 medical schools across the country. This is the first time in over eight years that NSW has held the role. "It has been a long time coming, and New South Wales has never been better placed to make a difference," says incoming President, fourth year UNSW student Tiffany Fulde.

The team is comprised of 14 medical students, including 8 from UNSW: Tiffany Fulde (Med IV), Cameron Korb-Wells (V), Jamie Alexander (V), Chris Mulligan (III), Shannon Nott (III), Kieran Owens (III), Yogeesan Sivakumaran (III) and Sally Holden (IV). Other students on the team include 5 from The University of Sydney and one from the University of Wollongong, allowing the team to represent the spectrum of a diverse medical student body- including undergraduate, graduate, metropolitan and rural background students. The team shares a wealth of first-hand experience in medical issues and representation as well as practical skills relating to their portfolios.

"This is important as we are at a vital time in AMSA's history; medical student numbers are increasing exponentially and there are a host of issues challenging medical education and the health workforce". With such pertinent issues facing medical students, the upcoming Executive is looking forward to a busy and challenging year ahead.
