Swine Flu Survey - perceptions & attitudes

Researchers at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine are undertaking a survey on the perceptions and attitudes of UNSW staff and students towards the 2009 Swine Flu pandemic.

This survey only takes a few minutes to complete and participation is voluntary. A $500 cash prize will be won by one lucky participant who submits a completed questionnaire. The winner will be selected at random by the Institutional Analysis and Reporting Office. To be eligible for the prize, please enter your staff or student number at the end of the questionnaire.

Staff/student numbers and email addresses will be removed from the survey data, so there is no way of connecting the respondent to an individual survey. We will assume that you consent to participating in the study, if you complete a survey.

The following researchers are involved with the study: Dr Holly Seale (SPHCM), Professor Raina MacIntyre (SPHCM), Dr Jacinta Crimmins (University Health Service), Associate Professor Mary-Louise McLaws (SPHCM) and Miss Debbie Van (Faculty of Medicine). The study is being undertaken as part of an independent learning project.

If you would like further information, or you have concerns about the conduct of the study, please phone and discuss them with Dr Holly Seale (lead investigator) on (02) 9385 3129. If staff have concerns please contact the Ethics Secretariat, The University of New South Wales, on (02) 9385 4234 or by email: ethics.sec@unsw.edu.au.

Cardiovascular Research Network - Research and Facilities Audit

The Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN) have as members, representatives of all the major Institutions within the state. However, it has been discovered that their researchers are not familiar with what is happening in research areas and institutions outside of their home team.

To address this a research and facilities audit is being established so that researchers have a one-stop shop where they can access this information. The CVRN is hoping to set up a primary database on the Heart Foundation website so that everyone can have a central point of contact.

The Faculty is facilitating this process by disseminating information about the audit and introducing the people involved who may contact you. The CVRN have asked to link to the Faculty's Research Interests section on our website. The three people involved are Kristina Cabala, Director of CVRN; the contracted project manager, Tracey Edinburg from ReSQ Clinical Research Pty Ltd, or her assistant, Sandra Schwartz.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of this project please contact: Kristina Cabala Director, NSW Cardiovascular Research Network, Tel: (02) 9219 2407

CVRN background
The Cardiovascular Research Network (CVRN) was established a couple of years ago with the goals of:
  • Increasing the amount of cardiovascular research funding in NSW
  • Increasing NSW's share of cardiovascular research funding across Australia
  • Increasing the number of cardiovascular researchers in NSW
  • Increasing collaboration amongst cardiovascular researchers within NSW

Volunteer Interviewers needed

Selecting medical students is critical to our Faculty and obviously also to the community. The interview is an important component and, to ensure we select the highest quality applicants, we need to conduct over 500 interviews.

We have many Faculty members already involved, but we still require additional interviewers with the following background:
  • Faculty members (both doctors and non-doctors),
  • Non-Faculty members (does not have affiliation with Faculty of Medicine, UNSW)
  • People with rural background (ie. grew up in rural areas or have strong affiliation with rural community)
The interviews will be held from Wednesday 18 to Wednesday 25 November. Interviewer training will be provided in July at the Kensington campus. We ask that new interviewers attend two sessions.
