UNSW Research Strategy Office


The role of the Research Strategy Office is to enhance the University's research performance and profile by working with Faculties, research teams and researchers to identify opportunities for research funding including awards and fellowships, ensure submission high quality, competitive, research grant applications to provide discipline specific expertise on grants support for UNSW researchers at all stages of their careers.

Major priorities of the Research Strategy Office include assisting UNSW researchers to initiate, facilitate and submit significant new national and international research funding applications, including for major research centres and program grants as well as strategically identifying, mentoring and assisting potential Laureate, Australia, ARC and NH&MRC Fellowship applicants.

The Research Strategy Office works closely with the Grants Management Office, which is responsible for the efficient administration and reporting of all research grants at UNSW. The Grants Management Office coordinates submission of grants, ensures compliance with funding agency rules and regulations, and that researchers meet all funding body financial and progress reporting requirements.

The Research Strategy Office and the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research Strategy are located on Level 4 (South Wing) of the Rupert Myers Building, UNSW Map Reference M15.



ILP Student looking for volunteers for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Study


We are looking for women to be part of a scientific study on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and resistance training conducted by the University of New South Wales.

We need volunteers who:
  • are aged 18-39 years old
  • have PCOS symptoms
You will be offered a 12-week resistance training program (3 sessions a week) at the Lifestyle Clinic. In this study, you will receive feedback on your health, metabolic profile and advice to improve your fitness.

The researchers involved are: Dr David Simar (Physiologist/Exercise Physiologist), Dr. Nadia Tejani (Consultant Endocrinologist), Mr. Chris Tzar (Exercise Physiologist) and Ms. Tina Cheng (Exercise Physiologist)

Database trial - Brain Navigator (Trial Dates: 14/07/09 - 31/08/09)


The University Library is very pleased to be able to trial the following content in order to ascertain its usefulness to the teaching and research needs of our academic staff and students.

Brain Navigator is an interactive atlas with 3D capabilities. It combines coronal, transverse and sagittal atlases and includes detailed descriptions of the images.

New OHS Unit Newsletter


The OHS Unit is producing a new newsletter to keep you informed on what is happening with OHS. The first edition is available at:

With regard to item number 2, there are draft OHS procedures and their associated documents available for consultation on the UNSW Policy website. The procedures below will be available for comment until August 31, 2009.

The draft procedures are:
  • OHS Hazard, Incident, Injury and Illness Reporting Procedure (OHS307)
  • Writing Safe Work Procedures Guideline (OHS027)

To access the draft versions visit the following website: http://www.policy.unsw.edu.au/consultation.htm. Submissions can then be made to the nominated person by the due date.

Once the consultation period is over and final changes are made, the updated documents will replace those currently available on the Human Resources OHS web site. Further procedures will become available for comment over the coming weeks and months.

I urge you to participate in the consultative review of these documents as it is your opportunity to help imrove your safety management system based on your experience.

Registration for Emergency SMS alerts is now available via myUNSW


UNSW SMS Emergency Notification System Overview – UNSWalert
Emergencies or crises can develop with very little warning. To ensure our University community is kept informed of such situations, UNSW has sourced a service to provide a rapid notification system that can be easily accessed.

UNSWalert is a Short Message System (SMS) designed to warn the UNSW community of extreme emergencies or crises on or around the surrounding precincts of the University campus.

Other methods of communication include the University email network, landline communication to Emergency Control Organisation members and regular updates on the main UNSW homepage.

All staff and students of UNSW and affiliated organisations can elect to receive emergency notification if they register for UNSWalert.

Registration Procedure:
UNSW Staff and Students –
  • Register via an opt in facility available through myUNSW:
  • Simply login to myUNSW https://my.unsw.edu.au
  • Select the My Staff or My Student profile;
  • Under the Self Service options on the left hand side of the page;
  • Click on Personal Details menu and select Phone;
  • This will list the numbers currently registered by you;
  • Click on add new telephone number;
  • Select mobile number and type in your number in the space provided;
  • Click the check box "OPT IN" for the Emergency SMS Service;
  • Click save and your record will be updated;
  • If you already have a mobile number recorded, select the edit tab and click the check box to OPT IN for the Emergency SMS Service which will then allow the University to use your number for the service.

Affiliated Organisations
To register you will need your miscellaneous account number (“m” number) and password. Go to http://www.redcoal.com.au/UNSW/Messaging/Cohort2login.aspx and complete the relevant firlds or alternatively register via email at emergency@unsw.edu.au stating your name, mobile number, the business name, and building/campus you work in.

Annual National Dementia Research Forum


Are you interested in learning more about dementia?

Hosted by the Dementia Collaborative Research Centres (DCRCs), the Annual National Dementia Research Forum will be held at the Wesley Conference Centre in Sydney on 24-25 September 2009.

The theme of the Forum is ‘Translating Research into Practice’ and there will be an emphasis on how lessons from academia can translate into best practice at the clinical coalface. The Forum will showcase the latest research in diagnosis, treatment and management of dementia, as well providing updates on drug treatments, prevention of dementia and maintaining quality of life with dementia.
This unique event will bring together a diverse group of participants, including health professionals, aged care workers, researchers, clinicians, service providers, carers and people with dementia.

Highlights of this year’s program include -
  • The Hon. Justine Elliot MP, Minister for Ageing, opening the Forum.
  • Presentations by prominent local and international keynote speakers on a wide range of topics, including:
    Providing dementia care in the community: an evidence based approach
    Professor Constantine Lyketsos, Elizabeth Plank Althouse Professor, The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Centre, USA
