1. Buying PCs and Laptops and XP and Vista and "Oh My" again...

As most of you know, approval is required on IT purchases. This process is pretty smooth now and I can approve purchases up to $5,000. We do not have to approve purchases from research funds but we are always happy to be involved in making recommendations since we will be involved in supporting the devices.

I have written about this in the past but we have again been seeing problems where devices are being purchased, without getting advice from us, and being faced with issues during installation that have a big impact on our support services.

This is especially the case where WindowsOS laptops have been purchased without thought as to which version of the operating system is to be installed. Most new laptops will come with Vista as the default option.

Now, Vista is a fine operating system with many nice features that make it more secure and more functional. However, some older software just does not run on Vista, and you may not have the time or inclination to put yourself through learning a new operating system at this time.

So please consider what software you plan on using and what you need from your laptop before choosing one with Vista.

Further If you buy a PC with Vista and you need or want to roll it back to XP this may not be possible as the manufacturers don't have drivers for some of their newer PCs - again this is particularly true with laptops. Also, even if it is possible to roll back, please keep in mind that this can be very time consuming so there may be a delay in getting your new PC back in your arms.

Finally, If you do buy a Vista PC then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure it is the Business edition as this will let you connect to the domain and the file server and all those goodies. We will not fully support PCs purchased with Home edition and will usually recommend a full re-install.

Come and ask our advice before jumping in. We have a range of standard builds that we have found to be easy to support and of excellent quality.

2. Desktops and Laptops and file backup and VPN

One of the easiest ways to keep your files safe is to ensure there is a copy on the file server.. Join the many happy people who sleep peacefully each night , knowing their precious data and documents are safe.
Contact your local file server coordinator (there's one in every campus based-school) or log a call with the servicedesk. Please note that this service is only available to users on the UNSW network. Users outside of the UNSW network eg. Area Health Service/Hospital networks are unable to connect to the Medicine File Server due to security restrictions on those networks.

If you are working from home or the road and you need access to those safely backed up files then you will need VPN access. A VPN is a virtual private network and provides access to the File server remotely. If you need VPN access then log a helpdesk call.

Just as an aside, USB sticks do not count as backups... they are good for moving things from A to B... CD burning is OK but time consuming. Oh and your desktop is not the best place for that only copy of your latest paper that is going to get published in Nature. You really should have it on your share of the file server.

So get cracking and sort out a way to get your files backed up on a regular basis.

3. Logging calls

As always, we love to help you in the hallways as we walk past but as we are usually trying to figure out the solution to a really complex sudoku it may surprise and sadden you when we forget that urgent problem you had.

Help us take better care of you by logging a call with the servicedesk (9385 1333) or if less urgent send an email to servicedesk@unsw.edu.au

Really we do look at the servicedesk calls even more that we look at LOLcats and the servicedesk even frowns at us if your calls are not answered within 4 hours and we get email reminders, and then we even review call numbers at our weekly meetings... So if you log a call you get a lot more love and attention from us than if you just ask us.

Speaking of logging calls.. our numbers have been really high the last couple of weeks and we have been a bit pressed in getting back to you. Sorry about that. We hope to have more sneakers and sandals on the ground in a few weeks.

2. Pfizer Australia Research Fellowships

Pfizer awards Fellowships each year to outstanding biomedical scientists wishing to establish a research career in Australia. Each Fellowship allows the successful applicant to continue their program of research at an Australian university or research institution, by providing a 5-year grant covering salary, travel and other establishment costs.

Each Fellowship is valued at up to AUD$1million.

As an indicative guide, the grant offers support to the individual at the level of Senior Lecturer, or occasionally, Reader salary range, with remaining funds used for other research related costs.

The Fellowships are designed to support a specific research program to be conducted by the applicant, primarily within an Australian research centre.

To be eligible to apply for a Fellowship, applicants should have a research-based doctoral degree in a scientific or medically related discipline, together with recognized post-doctoral achievements. A commitment to the establishment of a research career in Australia should be demonstrated by appropriate acknowledgement and support from a University or recognized local research institute.
