File Server Moves - almost there
We are continuing to move people and groups off the Medicine File server and onto the UNSW shared file service. This is almost complete.
Groups still to be migrated include the School of Medical Sciences, School of Psychiatry and the Black Dog Institute.
As I have said before, we recommend using the Home Drives and Group shares so that key documents are backed up. Let me say that again ... BACK UP = GOOD ... The SOE makes this transparent and is one of the advantages of that approach. SOE = easy backup.
Websites - pilot time
One of the big projects for this year is to replace the systems used to publish our Faculty websites.
I will be putting more information into the next couple of newsletters about this project but if you are interested in what is taking place you can read our project blog at http://blogs.unsw.edu.au/mcsu/
The practical aims are to make our websites easier to manage and to incorporate modern web elements. From an information architecture perspective our goal is to put a bigger emphasis on our people and projects and to better highlight activities at this level. People and projects and groups will all be able to have webpages that are quick to create and update. Oh, and we spent some time on the design too.
The pilot site will be NDARC (National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre) followed by the main Faculty site. I will put some rough timelines in the blog and keep you updated in the newsletters but we hope to have NDARC released in June and we will then start working on the other sites.
As I said last year, if you are doing any kind of web project... STOP now, have a read of the blog and give me a call. We are going to put a lot our time into this and would love to show you our vision and the approach we will be taking. You can play with our templates in about 8 weeks.
Research File Storage - a reality
Long promised but we are now only a few weeks away from being able offer much larger scale (multiple Terabytes) storage options for research projects. The systems are actually built and in the Randwick data centre and undergoing configuration and testing.
This is a backed-up service suitable for multi-year storage (eg: important data sets, imaging). The idea is that you can map to these research shares from both your local PCs and from systems attached to scientific devices.
We hope that this will be fast and easy to use on the network and will reduce need for lots of little local backup devices and all those disks you are buying from Harvey Norman.
If you would be interested in this kind of service then please send me an email and I will keep you posted with latest details.
Out of Warranty PC's let's talk
I am asking the Desktop team to help me identify any areas where we still have large numbers of PC's that are out of warranty.
Supporting these PC's can be very time consuming and we are starting to limit what kind of support we will offer on any device that is out of warranty (usually over 4 years for the recent HP desktops but possibly 3 years for some laptops and other desktops).
If you have of out of warranty PC's in your area that are being used daily by staff or students then please get in touch. We also want to know about any old PC's attached to scientific equipment we want to identify these and add them to a register.
Windows 7 SOE - a teaser
A windows 7 SOE is currently being built and tested by IT at UNSW. I will send more details on timelines etc in the next couple of months. The SOE will be based on the 64 bit version.
Eduroam - simple but useful
Sometimes the very basic can be the most useful. Eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service that allows university staff and students wireless internet access at participating national and international eduroam campuses.
UNSW is now part of eduroam and you can now use your zPass at other participating institutions to get access to wireless networks.
Colleagues visiting UNSW can jump onto our wireless network using eduroam today. Read more here https://www.it.unsw.edu.au/staff/eduroam/index.html

National Centre in HIV Social Research Seminar
Date: Tuesday April 12
Venue: NCHSR meeting room (Level 2 Webster Building, UNSW Main Campus),
Time: 4-5pm, followed by drinks.
Dr Philippe Adam from the NCHSR will be presenting a paper entitled ‘Identifying and addressing individual and social barriers to STI-testing among young people in New South Wales. Results from the online survey ‘Getting down to it’’ (see abstract below). Everyone welcome.
Abstract
While young people are at high risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), rates of STI testing remain low in this population. This may reflect that, due to a lack of research on determinants of STI testing, approaches used to promote STI testing in young people have mainly focused on raising awareness of STIs and have not comprehensively addressed the many complex factors that influence young people’s decision to test for STIs. To reduce the gap in research regarding determinants of STI-testing and to inform future STI-testing programs, a quantitative online study was conducted among 1, 100 sexually experienced young people aged from 16 to 26 in New South Wales. Using a comprehensive questionnaire and newly developed scales, the study assessed the prevalence and contribution of a wide range of individual, social, structural and health service factors potentially influencing young people’s decision to test for STI. The study’s findings offer a more comprehensive understanding of the many and multi-level factors that could be addressed by STI testing programs to further increase uptake of STI testing in young people.
