Making a difference – Building Bridges between Harvard and Australia

Professor Steven Krilis & Professor Richard StevensThe Dean Professor Peter Smith warmly welcomed Professor Richard Stevens from Harvard University who has accepted a fellowship within the Faculty of Medicine, at an event held at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre. The Harvard Club of Australia Foundation has sponsored Professor Richard Stevens’ fellowship which will see him collaborating with his good friend and long time colleague Professor Steven Krilis, Head of the Department of Immunology, at St George Hospital for a six month placement.

Professor Stevens PhD, Dept. Med. at HMS; and Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy at Brigham & Women’s Hospital (a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School) is a world leader in studying an immune cell known as the ‘mast cell’, with a special focus on ‘inflammatory bowel disease’ (IBD), for which there is at present, no long term cure. His work has the potential to realise a huge breakthrough for people facing this disease.

The event was attended by key members of the Harvard Club Foundation of Australia including Doctor Phil Nott, Chairman and John Turner, Secretary.

In supporting the fellowships and bringing Professor Stevens to UNSW Faculty of Medicine, Doctor Phil Nott said the Harvard Club Foundation of Australia was “Building bridges between Harvard and Australia” with the partnership “Making a difference by being good people together”.

New book minimises confusion of prostate cancer testing

General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (retd) has come on board with three key men’s health organisations to help launch a new book about prostate cancer that aims to reduce the apparent confusion felt by some men about testing and treatment.

The book launched in late February – with the help of Andrology Australia, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ) - in response to evidence that shows men are seeking a level of certainty in the face of competing views about the benefits of tests such as the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and the Digital Rectal Examination (DRE).

Associate Professor Prem Rashid, a consultant urologist and UNSW Conjoint Associate Professor, Rural Clinical School, has launched the fully revised edition of Prostate Cancer – Your Guide, hoping to reduce lingering uncertainty about the disease, testing and treatment options.

“This book endeavours to move men’s understanding of prostate cancer from uncertainty to a level where they are equipped with sufficient information to make more informed decisions,” said A/Professor Rashid. > full story

New Citrix web based system - NSS Student or HR users

IT at UNSW has upgraded the Citrix web based system which is used to access NewSouth Solutions Higher Education (aka NSS HE – used for student and HR).

The new system is aligned with other systems and will use your zID and ZPass.

To complete the upgrade the Citrix software needs to be added to your computer.

When is this happening?
The old system will be decommissioned at the end of April. We recommend that you upgrade to the new software within the next couple of weeks.

What you need to do
Log a call with IT Service Centre on 9385 1333 (ext. 51333) or ITServiceCentre@unsw.edu.au

If you have a UNSW PC that has been SOE’d ask to have the software downloaded to your computer.

If your machine has not been SOE’d ask to have someone come and install the software.

Using the new system
After the new client has been deployed to your machine, login to the new system via http://apps.unsw.edu.au. Enter your Zid and Zpass to log in. From the main screen click the Production folder, then ‘HE Desktop’ to open a Citrix session from where you can access NSS.

There is a support web page with more detailed information - http://www.it.unsw.edu.au/staff/online_apps/apps_unsw/. Also attached is a quick reference guide illustrating the features – also downloadable from the support page. There are 2 guides, 1 for SOE users and 1 for non SOE users.
