Learning and Teaching

The mission of UNSW Medicine is to provide a quality education within a community of learning and discovery. We believe that education is a continuous lifelong process that reaches beyond our students’ time at university. UNSW Medicine supports and improves learning and teaching within the Faculty and is committed to encouraging innovation based on international best practice and evidence in learning and teaching in Medicine and Higher Education.

The Faculty has three Associate Deans responsible for learning and teaching in the areas of Medical Education, Postgraduate Coursework and Research. In 2007, a new post (Fellow in Learning and Teaching) was created in each faculty by Learning & Teaching @ UNSW. The Fellow’s main role is to support scholarly practice in learning and learning within the faculty and facilitate communities of practice across disciplines, faculties and externally. The Fellow for the Faculty of Medicine is Dr Rachel Thompson.

A number of policies and strategies have been developed to support teaching and improve our students’ learning experience. We recognise that our teachers are our greatest resource to enable high quality learning. Both the Faculty and the wider university have a range of resources for staff development to improve teaching based upon contemporary research on how students learn and processes for review and evaluation. There is also a Medical Education Interest Group that: meets eight times a year for a seminar series on scholarship and research in learning and teaching. The group publishes a regular newsletter (see below) and holds an annual learning and teaching forum in December.
