IT Services and Support
Medicine Computer Support Unit (MCSU)
The
Medicine Computing Support Unit (MCSU) provides IT support services for faculty computer systems and supported desktop software applications including internet and email access on and off campus.
The
IT Service Desk is a central UNSW support service for all staff and students. Once you have logged a call it will be placed in the MCSU queue for action. You can expect to hear from a MCSU IT Technician within 1-2 hours of logging a call with the Service Desk. If you do not hear from MCSU within that time contact the MCSU IT Support Manager on 9385 8738.

Hardware
The procurement of computer hardware is managed by each unit within the faculty. If you require new computer equipment please discuss it with your unit's manager or
File Server Coordinator. The MCSU can assist and advise you on the selection of new computer equipment and obtaining quotations.
Software
Your computer should have the standard desktop applications installed. If you require new software or an upgrade please discuss this with your unit's manager or
File Server Coordinator. The list of available software and order forms are available on the
IT Services website.
Anti-Virus Software
All PCs owned by Medicine* have Symantec Antivirus (formerly Norton AntiVirus) installed and the virus definition files are updated automatically from the UNSW SAV Server. This software is supplied free to UNSW staff and enrolled students to install on university, home and mobile computers. See the
IT Services website.
*PCs located behind the SESIAHS firewall have Trend MicroScan installed and the virus definition files are automatically updated from the SESIAHS Server.
Please call the IT Service Desk on ext. 51333 if:
- Your anti-virus software notifies you that you have a virus
- You suspect/know that your anti-virus software is not receiving definition file updates
- You have received an email stating that you have a virus (note: do not do anything to your computer – call the IT Service Desk first)

Printers
The Faculty of Medicine uses local and networked printers. Networked printers are located on the Medicine Print Server (PRINT-MED) and have been named using its Location-Printer make/model so that users can easily identify which printer they wish to connect to. If you need help connecting to a printer, please call the IT Service Desk on ext. 51333.
Medicine Domain and File Server Access
If you are located on the Kensington Campus your File Server Coordinator can arrange access for you to the Medicine domain (MEDICINE) and to your unit’s files and directories on the Medicine File Server (FILES1-MED). The benefits of using the faculty-based file server for your data storage include daily backup of all data; server maintenance; security; and, shared as well as private storage space.
If you are not located on the Kensington Campus, your unit may have a local file server for you to work off, please check with your Unit Manager or log a call with the Service Desk on ext. 51333. If you choose to save files on your local hard disk drive (regardless of your location) it is advised that you make sure you have a backup (second) copy of those files saved elsewhere.
See the MCSU website for the list of
File Server Coordinators and more information on the
Faculty File Server.
