| Professor Robyn Richmond
School of Public Health and Community MedicineStatement of Interests:
Robyn’s research encompasses a broad spectrum of public health issues conducted over 26 years. Her research has focussed on the reduction of smoking among patients attending general practitioners and hospital outpatients clinics; the evaluation of the use of a range of pharmacotherapies to assist smokers to quit; the reduction of risky alcohol consumption among patients attending general practitioners and hospital outpatients clinics; improvement of health and lifestyles and reduction of cardiovascular risk factors among high risk groups in workplace settings and Indigenous people, and disadvantaged groups such as among those with a mental illness and prisoners; and investigation of the cardiovascular health of centenarians. Her research has led to fundamental and long standing impacts on policy, clinical practice, teaching and training. Her global research work includes a series of studies extending over 12 years in which she has developed and evaluated teaching programs on tobacco and smoking cessation techniques which have been implemented in medical schools globally. Recently, Robyn's research interests have expanded to include the phenomenal growth of centenarians in our society, and the lifestyle and genetic factors that influence longevity. Robyn was invited in 1991 to join as a representative of Australia, the Tobacco Prevention Section, which is a section of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. From 1994-1996, she was the elected Deputy Chair of the Tobacco Prevention Section and then from 1996 to 1998, the elected chair. This position lead to running training workshops in many countries including: Thailand, Turkey, France. During Robyn's academic career, she has published 104 papers in refereed journals, 37 books and booklets and 17 chapters in books. Her H index is 26. During Robyn's research career she has presented 188 papers at national and international conferences. She teaches at UNSW at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has developed training programs for health professionals.
