Elective Term - UNSW Students Only

Electives for Non-UNSW students, please go to the Clerkships webpage.

The information below is for UNSW Medicine enrolled students only. STUDENTS HOLDING AN AUSTRALIAN PASSPORT WHO ARE APPLYING TO THE UK WILL NEED A "TIER 4" VISA TO DO AN ELECTIVE.

PLEASE SEE 'IMPORTANT DATES' AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE REGARDING THE SUBMISSION OF ELECTIVE REPORTS.

** The elective report needs to be a minimum of 1,000 words covering all placements together. This is to be done via the original eMed submissions. If there was more than one placement, please submit the same 1,000 word report to each submission. The reason for this is so that the elective report will go into Portfolio as one single document.

Before applying to any UNSW teaching hospital for an elective place, please notify the Clinical Teaching Unit in that hospital. The contact details are here:

http://www.med.unsw.edu.au/medweb.nsf/page/Schools%20and%20Affiliates

If you intend to do a Rural placement, it is essential that you inform the Rural Clinical School on 9385 3210 prior to you contacting the Rural Hospital.

The Elective Term is a compulsory component of the UNSW undergraduate medicine program. This page and the following pages will provide the neccessary information for organising the term. Check the Important Dates (below) to ensure your application and reports arrive here on time for processing.

Note: Supervisor Report forms and other forms are on the right hand side of this page.

Students are required to complete the Elective Term Application form located on eMed then -
  1. Return your form (signed by prospective supervisor, or letter of agreement) to the Electives Coordinator in the Office of the Dean, UNSW Medicine.
  2. Your application is forwarded by the Electives Coordinator to the Clinical Associate Dean of your UNSW Hospital attachment.
  3. If your Clinical Associate Dean approves your application it will be forwarded to the Senior Associate Dean for final approval.
  4. If approved by the Senior Associate Dean you will receive a confirmation email.
  5. When approved you can confirm your acceptance of the offer with your prospective supervisor.
Each student must carefully consider each of the issues outlined and then satisfy herself / himself that she / he is applying for an elective that fits the criteria set down by the University before making a formal application via the Elective Term Application form. In addition, each student is required to complete the UNSW risk assessment online form to justify their rationale for undertaking the elective and the possible restrictions and potential risks involved.
