Categories of Entry - Local Applicants
It is anticipated that full-fee places will not be available for local applicants applying for entry in 2009. There will then be three categories that are available at UNSW for local students and these are detailed below. Note that students who gain entry via the ACCESS Scheme or the Rural Student Entry Scheme can also be allocated a place in any of the three categories.
1. Unbonded places (138 places)
This is the "standard" entry category. These places have no bonding or scholarships attached to them.
2. Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship places (9 places)
The Medical Rural Bonded Scholarships are each worth $22,744 a year in 2007 (indexed annually) to new medical students prepared to commit to at least six years of rural practice, once they complete their basic medical and postgraduate training. The scholarships aim to increase the number of doctors practising in rural and remote communities. These bonded scholarship places are only available to Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents. For further details see the
government website.
Note: If you accept a Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship you
cannot defer enrolment.
3. Bonded Medical Places (49 places)
Applicants who accept a place in this category will be "bonded" to areas of workforce shortage. They will be required to work for a minimum of six years in an area of workforce shortage for their chosen speciality. They will apply for a position after completion of the UNSW Medicine Program and specialty training (postgraduate) studies. The Australian Government has indicated that outer metropolitan and rural areas are the likely locations for the six years of bonded work. These bonded places are only available to Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents. For further details see the
government website.
Note: If you accept a Bonded Medical Place you
cannot defer enrolment.
How to apply for a Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship and/or a Bonded Medical Place
UNSW Faculty of Medicine has a preference system for all local applicants for our undergraduate medical program. This preference system ensures that the personal preferences of applicants are considered when offers of places are made.
The Faculty of Medicine requires applicants to complete an online internal preference form to indicate their preferences for the different types of medicine places at UNSW. Please note that at UNSW applicants do not apply for a Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship or a Bonded Medical Place through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).
Preferences for the different categories can be made on an internal web form (link below) and must be completed by
Friday 5 December, 2008. Applicants who wish to change their preferences after they have submitted a form, must complete a new preference form at the website link below. If an applicant submits more than one preference form, the last form submitted will be the preferences used in the process of offering places.
Applicants are offered places strictly in accordance with a ranked list (the combined scores of the UAI, UMAT and interview performance). Commencing with the highest ranking applicant, each applicant will be offered their highest available preference until the quota for each category is filled.
Note: If you accept a Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship or a Bonded Medical Place you
cannot defer enrolment.
Important Notes
As there are separate quotas for each category, applicants maximise their chance of being offered a place by being prepared to accept a place in all categories. However, it is important that applicants do not enter a preference for a category in which they have no intention of accepting a place.
As the final ranked list will be strictly adhered to in allocating places, no advantage will be obtained by any particular order of preference. Therefore applicants are advised to indicate their preferences precisely in accordance with their personal wishes.
Applicants who accept a bonded medical place will automatically be considered for an unbonded place in any later round of offers. A bonded medical place would only be upgraded to an unbonded place if an unbonded place became available and the applicant was next in line on the ranked list.
It will be assumed that applicants only wish to be considered for the unbonded category if they do not complete the preference form.
