Associate Dean (Postgraduate Coursework)
Alan Hodgkinson
RN, BBus KCAE, MCH UNSW
Alan Hodgkinson brings to the Faculty postgraduate coursework program several decades of experience in journalism, nursing, education and management. He consolidated his clinical management experience with degrees in business administration and community health and joined the Faculty in 1993 to work on the Public Health Workforce Education and Training Study. Soon after, he became coordinator of the Master of Public Health, which has now become the biggest MPH in Australia.
He now coordinates programs which include students from all over Australia and the rest of the world, and liaises with employer groups, professional bodies and government to ensure the Faculty’s programs meet current employer and funder needs. Many of the students and alumni occupy key positions in health and health-related fields.
His teaching includes management of human resources in health, and health management reform, informed by his ongoing consulting work in developing management and leadership capacity in Pacific Island Countries, specifically Fiji and Solomon Islands, and through the Pacific Open Learning Health Net.
While based in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Alan has represented the Faculty on postgraduate coursework issues for many years. He is dedicated to providing high quality programs which are relevant not only to health professionals' needs, but also contribute to improving health.
Alan was appointed Deputy Head of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine in November 2007.
