Philip Jones

Professor Philip Jones has been the Faculty's Associate Dean (Education) since January 2006. He graduated from Sydney University in 1976. He was awarded Fellowship as a Physician in Infectious Diseases before completing a PhD in Immunology at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University in 1987. He is currently a senior staff specialist in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Prince of Wales Hospital and has a conjoint appointment to the Prince of Wales Clinical School.
Professor Jones commenced his association with the UNSW as Senior Lecturer when he became Director of the AIDS Unit at Prince Henry Hospital in 1987. He has held positions as the Head of Infectious Diseases at Prince Henry/Prince of Wales Hospitals and Area Director for Communicable Diseases for the South Eastern Area Health Service from 1998 to 2003. He is a past President of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases. His clinical research interests include cardiac infections including endocarditis and pacemaker and other cardiac device infections.
Professor Jones has a major interest in clinical teaching and learning. In 2000, he was awarded a Master of Higher Education following studies in the UNSW Professional Development Centre. He was involved with the development of the current MBBS program from the inception of its planning in 1998. He has been a member of several curriculum committees and has been involved in the design of new courses including Foundations in Phase 1, Health Maintenance in Phase 2 and Preparation for Internship in Phase 3. He is currently the Chair of the Phase 3 Committee and convenor of the Phase 3 Medicine course. In 2010, he received a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
