Arts/Medicine Program (3841)
General information
The Arts/Medicine Program (3841) is a seven year combined program leading to the award of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in addition to the award of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
The program allows students to pursue their interest in the Arts and Social Sciences during their medical studies and will appeal to those who are interested in a broader education or are considering a “different” type of medical career.
Arts/Medicine students are exempt from 12 units of credit of General Education courses and 12 units of credit of non Faculty courses (also known as extra-Faculty elective courses).
How do students enrol in the Arts/Med Program?
Students can enrol in the Arts/Medicine Program when they accept their enrolment online or by emailing the Faculty Office (m.brockbank@unsw.edu.au) to request a change to their program details.
When is the best time to commence Arts courses?
Ideally students should start Arts courses in Session 1 of their second year (particularly if they are interested in Level 1 language courses which are only offered in Session 1). However, if approved, students can enrol up to the end of Year 2 (although these students may take General Education courses “unnecessarily”).
What are the requirements of the Arts/Medicine Program?
Students are required to complete 66 units of credit in courses chosen from the subject areas in Lists A and B at the link below
http://www.arts.unsw.edu.au/futurestudents/undergraduate/major_sequences.html
Students must complete 42 units of credit in a major sequence. A major sequence usually includes 12 units of credit at Level 1 and 30 units of credit at Upper Level.
Students are also required to complete 12 units of credit from a sequence of study other than their major sequence. The maximum in any one sequence of study is 12 units of credit at Level 1 and 54 units of credit overall. Students should limit their Level 1 courses to 24 units of credit overall.
Information about the structure of major sequences can be found in the Areas of Specialisation A-Z Section of the online Undergraduate Handbook.
Can students complete the seven year program in six years?
No, the program is not designed to be completed in less than seven years.
When is the best time to take the year off to concentrate on Arts studies?
Ideally students should take the Arts year in Year 3 or Year 4 of the combined program, leaving their Phase 2 coursework to Yr 5. Under special circumstances it may be possible to take the year's break between Phase 2 & Phase 3. However, this would only be considered in special circumstances and would be the last point in the program that the Arts year could be considered.
