About eMed

In 2004, the Faculty of Medicine introduced a web-accessible curriculum management system to manage the educational and administrative aspects of the undergraduate program in medicine. Called eMedTM, the system is a trademarked suite of online tools that was designed by staff to meet the unique requirements of the program. Available to students and staff, eMedTMconsists of the following:

  • WebCTTM– a third party learning management system supported by UNSW.

Map

The Map is the central repository of curriculum data. It holds up-to-date information about the structure, content, graduate outcomes and assessments in the Medicine 3802 Program (as of September 2008 the Map also holds content files and course archives). It provides staff and students with an overview of program activities, including the aims, key concepts and key resources for individual learning activities. The Map facilitates curriculum design, implementation and review. It helps with curriculum integration, and with identifying gaps and overlaps in the program. It supports the alignment of graduate outcomes with activities and assessment. It also encourages communication and collaboration amongst staff.

Timetable

Students and teaching staff are able to view their individual timetable of learning activities for a day, week, month or a complete course. Timetable tells students which groups they are members of for teaching and learning purposes. Every learning activity listed in Timetable links back to Map, should students and teachers wish to know more about the activity. The tool notifies users by individualised email whenever Timetable updates occur.

Portfolio

Students use Portfolio to submit individual assignments, group projects, evidence of achievement notes and reflective essays for portfolio examinations. Each submission to Portfolio is stored and accessible to students while they are enrolled in the program.

Teamwork

Students use Teamwork to provide self and peer feedback in relation to project group work. The tool can also hold feedback from teachers on student's contributions to other group sessions. All comments contributed to the system, by and about a student, are available to the Portfolio assessors as evidence towards the student's achievement of the Teamwork capability.

Tracking

Following their respective due dates, assignment, group project and reflective essays are printed from the Tracking tool and distributed to assessors. Once read and marked, the assessor then adds grades and comments for specific submissions online. Exam results are also entered into the Tracking system. Tracking can then produce reports that are used for the academic review process where overall course grades are decided.

Results

Students use the Results tool to view their submission results and exam results. It is in Results that students can track their progress throughout the program. They can use Results to track how they have performed with regard to the graduate capabilities. Exam results in this system are provisional only. myUNSW is used for official course results.

MyPreferences

Students use the MyPreferences tool to register preferences and/or requests for negotiated assignments, assignments and group projects (including those with a quota limit).

WebCT

WebCT is a third party online learning management system supported by UNSW. It is used in Medicine 3802 to manage course activities outlined in the Map. Each course in Medicine 3802 has a WebCT course site, which is based on a program template. By combining the use of WebCT with Map, staff and students have online access to course guides, lecture notes, activity handouts, readings, assignment information, self-assessment quizzes and general communications.
