8:00 am - 5:30 pm
The third Annual Symposium on "Advances in Public Health and Health Services Research at UNSW" was held on 5 August 2011 at the John Niland Scientia Building, Kensington Campus, UNSW.
The conference showcased the most exciting elements in research from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and its affiliated Research Centres: The Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity; Australian Institute of Health Innovation; The Kirby Institute; and The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, which together form the strongest concentration of expertise and capacity in population health and health services research in Australia.
The keynote speaker this year was Dr Tom Calma, former Aboriginal Social Justice Commissioner, who spoke about closing the gap between the physical and mental health enjoyed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians.
A range of topics followed (health inequalities, translational research and global health as well as research using innovative methodologies such as data linkage and mixed methods) showcasing the achievements of the School and the Research Centres.
The day ended with a lively debate on the future of public health in government policy and concluded with an awards ceremony with prizes presented by the Associate Dean of Research, Professor Denis Wakefield. The winner of the Peter Baume Public Health Impact prize was Professor Kate Dolan (National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre).
See prize winners. Congratulations to prize winners, and thanks to everyone who made the day a success.
