Postgraduate Travel Grants
These grants are funded by an allocation from the School of Medical Sciences. The grants are intended to help defray the cost of conference attendance for research students enrolled in the School.
Grants will be up to $500 per student for interstate conferences within Australia, and up to $1,500 for students presenting at international conferences.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a grant, you must:
- Currently be enrolled as a postgraduate research student (masters or doctorate) in the School of Medical Sciences; and
- Be the first and presenting author of a talk or poster at the conference, with the abstract cited in the conferences proceedings. The abstract must acknowledge the student’s affiliation with the School of Medical Sciences.
- Have applied for GRS/PRSS funding.
Students are only eligible (note that this does not mean "entitled") to receive one grant per annum. Full-time PhD students may apply for support for a maximum of 3 national conferences or 1 international and 2 national conferences during their tenure. Full-time MSc students may apply for 2 national or 1 international and 1 national conference. Part-time students may only apply every second year.
Application Procedure
Applications take time to prepare so please apply as early as possible and certainly well before the conference deadline. You must provide a covering letter, co-signed by your supervisor, indicating your eligibility. The following should also be included in the letter or in attachments:
- The name, date and venue of the conference;
- Copy of accepted abstract;
- The estimated cost of your attendance at the conference, itemising travel, accommodation and registration costs and including copies of invoices or receipts of items already paid and;
- Details of other financial assistance for attending the conference you have obtained or applied for, external to the School (e.g. funding from the society);
- Details of any previous travel grants.
Assessment and Notification Procedure
Applications will be assessed by the Research Support Committee. Generally, selection will be on the basis of merit and the importance of the conference to the applicant.
Successful applicants will be notified and should contact the School's Finance Administrative Officer to organise payment of their grant.
