Staff


New Chair of Pharmacology
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Margaret Morris as our new Chair of Pharmacology. Dr Morris will take up her new post in the second session of 2005. She will be leading the expansion of research and teaching activities in the discipline of Pharmacology. Dr Morris joins us from the University of Melbourne where she has been working for ten years, most recently as Associate Professor and Deputy Head of their Department of Pharmacology. We look forward to welcoming Dr Morris to SOMS in late September.

Promotions
Congratulations to Darren Curnoe, Andrew Moorhouse and Nicodemus Tedla on their well deserved promotion to Senior Lecturer which takes effect on 1 July 2005.

Farewell Dr Wendy Lipworth
The Department of Pathology says farewell to Dr Wendy Lipworth, who has been an Associate Lecturer/Lecturer for the past 3 years. Wendy is leaving to pursue a PhD in Ethics at the University of Sydney. She has contributed significantly to the Department, in particular through her role in the revision and redevelopment of the 2nd year Pathology course for Science students, as well as to the Faculty as Arts/Medicine advisor. We wish her the very best in her future career.

Promotion to Lecturer
The deadline for applying for promotion to Lecturer in 2005 is Friday 22 July. Eligible staff interested in applying must submit a draft application to the Acting Dean and arrange to meet with him to review the application no later than Wednesday 13 July. Applicants should make an appointment with Richard Henry by contacting Jill Edwards as soon as possible.

Grants and Awards


New Equipment for the HMU
The NHMRC have awarded a $30,000 Equipment Grant to the Histology and Microscopy Unit (HMU). The funds will purchase a new DP-70 Digital Camera and an Olympus BXS1 Research Microscope with fluorescence attachment and Macro fluorescence objectives. Congratulations to Maria and the team on expanding this very valuable service for our students and researchers.

UNSW International Fellowships Program
UNSW offers the International Fellowships Program to outstanding UNSW staff with the aim of: providing high-quality staff development opportunities, developing and strengthening links between UNSW and selected global research-intensive universities, and gaining knowledge about research strengths and research training and administrative practices in these universities. The Program is divided into four categories:
The Anthony Mason Fellowships
The Universitas 21 Fellowships
The John Yu Fellowship Program to Europe
The Gordon J Samuels Fellowships

Endeavour Australia Postgraduate Awards and Scholarships
Applications for 2006 are now open for these Australian Government Awards. Awards are available for research, specific skills acquisition, Masters and partial PhD programs for students, researchers and academics from overseas. Different award categories are open to applicants from specific countries or regions.

Cancer Council NSW Strategic Research Partnership Grants
This scheme supports collaboration with clinical research teams to solve high priority research questions with a tangible impact on cancer control. Applications will be considered from:
- Clinical groups whose research and service will be focused on patients affected by a particular form, or closely related forms, of cancer
- Groups that are inherently multidisciplinary, i.e. they routinely entrain a range of clinical and research disciplines in research and problem solving.
Strategic Research Partnerships will be funded for five years from January 2006 and be limited to a maximum of $250,000 per annum.

Alzheimer’s Australia Research Foundation
- Dementia Research Grants
Three seeding grants are available for new investigators to research a dementia-relevant area. Grants are awarded in both biological/non-clinical research and clinical/psychosocial research area. Grants are valued at up to $15,000 each.
- Traveling Scholarship
The scholarship assists postgraduate clinicians or researchers to undertake research or advanced study relevant to the field of dementia at a hospital or university overseas. The study period should be between six weeks and three months and the applicant must undertake to return to Australia for a minimum of one year. The scholarship is valued at up to $15,000.

Renovation Hazards
Due to the renovations work taking place on the 4th and 5th floors of Wallace Wurth, there has been some accumulation of discarded materials. This refuse represents a health and safety risk in terms of fire and obstruction. Please contact UNSW Facilities on ext. 54981 to arrange for the disposal of any refuse in your work area.

Animal Handling Training Course
The Risk Management Unit (RMU) have offered to run a tailored training course in animal handling for 10-20 SOMS staff. Students and staff who are interested in learning about the safe handling of animals in their working environment should contact Professor Roland Stocker (r.stocker@unsw.edu.au, ext. 51309) to register their interest.

Secure Storage, Handling and Record Keeping of Therapeutic Goods
This training session provides researchers with the knowledge and skills to access a secure drugs store, maintain records and handle and dispose of therapeutic goods according to UNSW policy and NSW legislation. Proposed dates for the course are Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30 June 2005. Staff interested in attending should contact Aruna Lobo (aruna.lobo@unsw.edu.au, ext. 54234) or Veronika Tatarinoff (v.tatarinoff@unsw.edu.au, ext. 53923) to register their interest.


School Retreat: 13 &14 July 2005


A School Retreat will be held in Room 210 on 13 and 14 July from 9-5. On 13 July the morning session will be "Women in Academia" chaired by Karen Gibson. In the afternoon the session will be "Career Paths for Postdoctoral Staff" chaired by Brett Garner. On 14 July the morning session will be "Professional Development in Teaching" chaired by Gary Velan and the final afternoon will be dedicated to forward planning for the School. It is hoped to attract speakers to each session with time for discussion afterwards. A draft program will be circulated shortly. All academic and research staff are welcome to attend, if you cannot attend all the sessions, please come to as many as possible. Coffee and tea will be available as well as refreshments at lunch time. Please contact Wendy regarding attendance for catering purposes.


Staff Travel Policy


In light of the current budget restrictions placed on SOMS by the Faculty, all applications for staff travel grants will be suspended indefinitely.
