Museum
The Museum has landed! Now firmly entrenched on the ground floor of the Samuels Building, the Museum is gradually being reconstructed to achieve full operation in July/August this year. Members of our volunteer staff are currently undertaking the placement and affixing of thousands of shelf labels, without which our medical students and others are unable to find and relocate specimen pots borrowed from the shelves for their study purposes. Our special thanks go to them for assisting with this tedious but critical task.
Museum staff have assisted with requests for the use of appropriate museum resources for media information and imaging recently – one for the Four Corners program, one for anti-smoking advertising and legislation purposes and another image for use on the changing face of the SOMS webpage.
State of the art computers and data projectors have been acquired for museum programs from 2004 museum fee income. Special model organ sets have been purchased to enhance displays and highlight the comparison between “normal” and diseased organs. These, and other additional models and resources yet to arrive, have been funded by a very generous grant from the U Committee, UNSW and for which we are most grateful. The official launch of the new Museum complex is scheduled for Monday 5th December, 2005.
OHS
Standard Operating Procedures
An initiative to collect and record Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) throughout the School is being coordinated by Charles Harvey. Procedures for operating high risk equipment are currently being prioritized. A pro forma SOP template is available for staff to document SOPs for equipment in their lab or area. Please contact
Charles Harvey (ext. 52541) for a copy of the SOP template.
UNSW Asia
A proposal to offer a Medical Sciences degree at the Singapore campus, commencing in 2008, was approved by the Academic Planning Working Group for UNSW Asia on 21 June. Final commitment to deliver this will depend on the outcome of university-to-government negotiations about the provision of scholarship-funded places to articulate with regional clinical training programs. In the meantime, development of the academic program will be the responsibility of Prof Rakesh Kumar, who will be seconded 3 days per week to work for the Division of the DVC (International & Development). Dr Gary Velan will take over the role of Head of Teaching for Pathology, effective from 1 September 2005.
School Retreat: 13 &14 July 2005
The retreat will take place next week in Room 210. Please advise
Wendy Wartho if you will be attending. The new Dean of Medicine, Peter Smith has agreed to attend on Wednesday 13 July.
