Neuroscience Training Program
The University of New South Wales has a world class Neuroscience training program. This is achieved by integrating teaching across faculties represented by Brain Sciences UNSW. This includes the Medical Sciences, Psychology, Engineering, Maths and the clinical disciplines of Neurology, Psychiatry and Optometry. UNSW offers advanced undergraduate education in the Neurosciences and a Neuroscience Honours degree which provides theoretical and practical training in the neurosciences. This is the recommended pathway towards a doctoral research program in Neuroscience.
Undergraduate Neuroscience Training
Training in Neuroscience begins at the undergraduate level and is available through a BSc, BAdvSci or BMedSci. The School of Medical Sciences offers a range of Neuroscience courses - please see the Neuroscience Undergraduate page for details. All three of these degrees enable undergraduates to enter into a Neuroscience Honours program. For advice on the Neuroscience program, please contact Ms Christine Riordan (c.riordan@unsw.edu.au).
Honours in Neuroscience
Neuroscience training in the 4th year (Neuroscience Honours) is run jointly by the School of Psychology and School of Medical Sciences (SoMS). It provides training in the neurosciences at the cutting edge of the field. Please see the Neuroscience Honours webpage for further information.
The Next Step after Neuroscience Honours
The undergraduate Neuroscience training at UNSW, commencing with a Foundations course at level 2 and progressing to advanced undergraduate education with level 3 and level 4 (Neuroscience Honours) courses. This is one of the recommended pathways towards post-graduate training (e.g. a doctoral research program) at the University of New South Wales and affiliated Institutes in the Brain Sciences.
Brain Sciences encompasses the basic neurosciences, psychiatry, psychology, drug and alcohol, neurology, neurosurgery, biomedical engineering and mathematics. Its constituent members are based in the Faculties of Medicine, Science and Engineering, and a number of UNSW-affiliated independent research institutes (Neuroscience Research Australia, Black Dog Institute and the Garvan Institute for Medical Research). A virtual institute called Brain Sciences UNSW profiles research and training opportunities (please refer to the Brain Sciences UNSW webpage for further information). The neuroscience courses through the BSc, BAdvSci and BMedSci enable students to pursue Ph.D. research in a broad range of areas within the Brain Sciences. Students are advised to contact research group leaders within the Brain Sciences consortium to discuss potential doctoral research opportunities.
