Laboratory based staff/students:
In addition to the standard induction form, all new lab based staff and postgraduate students should be inducted with this form:
HS049 - Laboratory Induction and Authorisation Form
During the induction, consider the specific hazards, risks and safety equipment for the area/s of work and the experience of the individual being inducted and as part of the induction, introduce the staff/student to the following laboratory documentation and practices:
- Evacuation procedures for the building
- Emergency response plans for the lab e.g. what to do if in the middle of an experiment and evacuation is called, or what to do if an experiment catches fire.
- Laboratory Manual (if the lab has a lab manual)
- Risk Assessments
- Safe Work Procedures
- MSDS
- Chemical register
- Chemical storage locations and practices (including labelling)
- Biological register
- Biological storage locations and practices
- Waste disposal system – e.g. distribute local protocol, show where keys to store, secondary containers are kept, induct to waste store(s)
- Spill kit locations and local spill procedures
- Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment, location, requirements in the lab, maintenance
- Laboratory licensing conditions e.g. OGTR certified, radiation, PC2, AQIS
- Where laboratory records are kept including, training, induction, workplace inspection checklists, audit and other inspection records
- Laboratory specific websites &/or computer file locations
- Local H&S Web resources
