PIRT

What is PIRT?

The Program of International Research and Training (PIRT) is the international arm of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre’s core business.

Mission Statement

Our goal is to facilitate research and training to minimise the harms from drug use. We aim to increase the effectiveness of drug treatment internationally.

In order to increase the effectiveness of drug treatment four goals need to be met:

  • identify the harms to which treatment should be directed;
  • effective treatments should be available to respond to these harms;
  • treatment providers need to be aware of which treatments are effective; and
  • those in need of treatments should be made aware of ways in which to minimise drug related harm, and of the availability of effective forms of drug treatment.

Vision

The aim of PIRT is to:

  • build capacity into research in drug treatment within developing countries.
  • build capacity for monitoring drug use and drug problems in developing countries.
  • build alliances between Australia and developing countries in terms of understanding drug trends and law enforcement.
  • encourage policy relevant research consistent with national strategies and cultures.

Areas of specialisation

PIRT works on a range of issues encompassing licit and illicit drug use and related harms. The geographical focus of our work is the Asia-Pacific region. Particular areas of specialisation include:

  • HIV prevention for injecting drug users
  • methadone maintenance treatment in community and prison settings
  • HIV prevention in prisons and other closed settings

Collaboration with international partners

PIRT encourages partnerships with international organizations and individuals in the Asia-Pacific region.
