Updating Symantec Antivirus 10.1 for Windows XP/2000
Due to a serious vulnerability to Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) [version 10.1*] it is strongly recommended that you update your current version of SAV as soon as possible. The following instructions explain how to update your current version of SAV.
This procedure may take up to 10 minutes and requires the user to reboot their computer.
Please read the instructions very carefully. Some users may find it beneficial to print this page for easy reference while you run through the instructions.
These instructions are best viewed in Internet Explorer, other browsers may show slightly different screen shots when downloading/running the update.

Note: You should contact the
IT Service Desk on

- you do not have Symantec Antivirus Security listed under the programs list and you do not have the Symantec Antivirus icon
in your Start bar.
- you are running Windows 95/98 or Windows NT
- you are running the older version of Nortons Antivirus [NAV 7.6].
- you have any problems or questions regarding the update
Checking Symantec Antivirus version
- Click on Start, Programs, Symantec Client Security then choose Symantec Antivirus or right-click on the Symantec Antivirus icon
, located on the Windows task bar.
If your Symantec Antivirus Program Version begins with 10.1 you will need to update Symantec Antivirus. Please follow the instructions below starting at Step 1.
If your Symantec Antivirus Program Version is listed as 10.1.5.5000 you will need to update Symantec Antivirus. Please follow the instructions at Step 4 to 6 and then 15 to 19.
If your Symantec Antivirus Program Version is listed as 10.1.5.5001 your antivirus is up to date.
If you are running an older program version of Symantec Antivirus, please contact the IT Service Desk on 9385 1333.
Otherwise continue with the instuctions below.
- Click on the Exit button.
Instructions for updating SAV to 10.1.5.5001
- Download Symantec Antivirus 10.1.5 (msi)
- Click on the Save button
- Choose Save in: Desktop and click on the Save button.
- Download Symantec Antivirus 10.1.5.5001
- Choose Save in: Desktop and click on the Save button.
- Close all open applications and restart your computer. Log in as normal and proceed immediately to the next step - do not launch any applications such as email.
- Double-click on the SAV+10.1.5+(msi).zip file (previously placed on your Windows desktop).
- Accept any prompts from your unzip application such as WinZip.
- Double-click on the Symantec Antivirus.msi file.
- Click on Next.
- Ensure the Modify option is selected, then click on Next.
- Click on Next.
- Click on Install.
- Click on the Finish button.
- Double-click on the SAVCE_10.1.5._PP1+(5001).zip file (previously placed on your Windows desktop).
- Click on the Update button to begin the installation
- Click on the Finish button
- You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please click on the Yes button.
- Once your computer has restarted please:
- Check the Symantec Antivirus Program Version. It should be 10.1.5.5001. Please see instructions at the top of this page.
- Check that the Virus Definition File is also up to date (just below SAV Program Version). The date should be within a week of the current date. If not, click on LiveUpdate button.
- Run a Full Scan of your computer by clicking on Full Scan and then the Scan button.
