Updating and Patching Symantec Antivirus (SAV) 10.0 for Windows XP/2000
Due to a serious vulnerability to Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) [version 10.0*] it is strongly recommended that you update your current version of SAV as soon as possible. The following instructions explain how to update your current version of SAV.
It is also recommended that you save and close all documents and most applications that you have open before commencing with the update. This procedure may take up to 20-30 minutes and requires the user to reboot their computer.
Please read the instructions very carefully. Some users may find it beneficial to print and bookmark this page for easy reference or leave this page open while you run through the instructions.
These instructions are best viewed in Internet Explorer 6, other browsers may show slightly different screen shots when downloading/running the update.

Note: You should contact the
IT Service Desk on
93851333 if:
- you do not have Symantec Antivirus Security listed under the programs list and you do not have the Symantec Antivirus icon
in your Start bar.
- you are running Windows 95/98 or Windows NT
- you are running the older version of Nortons Antivirus [NAV 7.6].
- you have any problems or questions regarding the updates.
Checking Symantec Antivirus version
1. Check what version of Symantec Antivirus (SAV) you are running by:
- Clicking on Start, Programs, Symantec Client Security then choose Symantec Antivirus. Or...
- Windows Start bar locate the Norton Antivirus icon
, right-click on it and select Open Symantec Antivirus…

If you are running
10.1.0.394, then you currently have the
latest version of SAV 10. Click the
LiveUpdate button to make sure you have the latest
Virus Definition File, the date should be
within a
week of the current date.
Otherwise continue with the instuctions below.
CLICK Exit
Instructions for updating SAV to 10.1.0.394
1) DOWNLOAD
SAV 10.1.0.394 from
http://www.acsu.unsw.edu.au/soft_dist/anti_virus/norton/ITS_SAV10-1.exe .
* You will be prompted for your staff number and unipass.
CLICK Run
CLICK Run
You may get the above screen if you have Lotus Notes running, please close Lotus Notes. And CLICK Retry
CLICK Yes (You can click No, but you must restart later, the sooner the better)
2)
Check the SAV version. It should be
10.1.0.394 (see instructions on top of page)
3) Also
Check that the
Virus Definition File is also up to date (just below SAV Version). The
date should be within a
week of the current date.
If not click on
LiveUpdate button.
